Visitor rush spices up Caribbean island

Grenada is in demand this year with the Spice Island emerging as one of the leading Caribbean destinations of choice among UK visitors.

UK visitor arrivals increased by 12.23% in the period January-July compared to 2023 and 31.64% over the same period for 2022.

When visitors from around the world are taken into account, tourist numbers rose by 20% in the period compared to 2019 and 18% compared to 2023.

And significantly, the month of July saw arrivals increase by 10% over 2019 and 5% over 2023– and that was in spite of the fact that the island was badly hit by Hurricane Beryl in the first week of that month.

Following the passage of Beryl, the northern parts of the island and sister isles needed relief aid and assistance, while mainland Grenada remained open for visitors.

“We are thrilled to see such positive growth in our visitor arrivals during this period, which speaks volumes about Grenada’s enduring appeal and the hard work of our tourism stakeholders,” said Petra Roach, CEO of the Grenada Tourism Authority.

“Our strategic efforts to maintain and grow our market share have been multifaceted. We have actively engaged with our key source markets to meet directly with travel and airline partners, as well as with members of the media,” she explains.

“We are optimistic about continuing this momentum throughout the rest of 2024 and beyond for Grenada,” she added.

The tri-island destination of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique positions itself as an attractive option for sunseekers, beachgoers, diving enthusiasts and foodies.

Key attractions include waterfalls, white-sand beaches, dive sites such as the world’s first underwater sculpture park and the largest shipwreck in the Caribbean, and visits to organic chocolate producers.
