Runners and adventure travellers can now sign up for what is being billed as the World’s Most Remote Marathon, set to take place for the first time on St Helena on February 28, 2027.
Held in the heart of the South Atlantic, the event offers a stark contrast to traditional city races, replacing crowds and urban backdrops with dramatic volcanic scenery, lush highlands and sweeping ocean views in one of the world’s most isolated destinations.
Participants can choose from four distances – a full marathon (42.2km), half marathon (21.1km), 10km or 5km – all beginning in the grounds of Plantation House, the official residence of the island’s Governor and home to Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal.
The route takes in forest trails, mountain paths and coastal cliffs before finishing in Jamestown, the island’s historic capital.
The race forms the centrepiece of St Helena’s wider Adventure Week, designed to showcase the island’s natural assets and immersive experiences. Alongside the marathon, visitors can tackle the iconic Jacob’s Ladder climb, join guided hikes across varied terrain, try open water swimming or explore the destination’s marine life and heritage.

Jonathan Passaportis, Head of Tourism for St Helena Government, said the event is “far more than a race”.
“It is an invitation to run in one of the most extraordinary and unique destinations on the planet. Whether you are a seasoned runner or an adventurous traveller, this event offers the chance to achieve something truly special in 2027,” he said.
“With limited capacity on flights and accommodation, we encourage those interested to book early and start preparing to take on this unique challenge.”
Entry fees are priced at £65 for the full marathon, £38 for the half marathon, £20 for the 10km and £12 for the 5km. All packages include race participation, a finisher medal and access to Adventure Week activities.
St Helena is accessed via direct flights from South Africa, with additional services planned from Cape Town to support the event, departing on February 23 and March 2 2027.
Accommodation options range from boutique hotels and guesthouses to self-catering cottages.
