Boston Common

Stroll through the 44 acres that dominate the heart of the city.  Considered the oldest public park in the U.S. (established in 1634) it remains one of the country’s most iconic green spaces. It has played a key role in the city’s history since 1775, when over 1000 Redcoats made camp on the Common during the British occupation of Boston in 1775. It was from here that three brigades of Redcoats embarked to make the fateful trip to Lexington and Concord that kicked off the American Revolution.

Today it is the starting point for guides taking visitors along the of the Freedom Trail, and is also a place of summer picnics, fall foliage, swan boat rides and winter ice-skating on Frog Pond,

Fenway Park

American football is making its mark on the international sporting stage, but it is baseball that remains “America’s Sport” and there’s no finer or more historic place to watch a match, or take a stadium tour, than the home of the Boston Red Sox.

The “ballpark” remains, much like it did the day it opened on April 20, 1912.

Available year-round, tour guides lead groups through the hallowed halls and explain legendary moments in the stadium’s history. On game days, The Red Sox even offer free bike valet parking for those with match tickets – Bluebikes is the city’s public bike sharing system, providing more than 3,500 bikes at over 400 stations in 11 cities and towns throughout the Boston metro area.

JFK Presidential Library and Museum

This homage to the country’s ill-fated 35th president is located on the University of Massachusetts campus and is easily reached from downtown Boston via the Red Line on the subway (called the T). Get off at the JFK/UMass stop.

The Museum utilises high-definition, large-screen projections, interactive displays, re-mastered films and original artefacts to chart the life and times of JFK and bring to life his 1,000 days in office.
Visitors learn about his childhood and family, his time as a commander of a patrol torpedo boat in the South Pacific during World War II, his political rise as a Democrat in the House of Representatives and then as a US Senator, and his marriage to Jacqueline Bouvier, a writer with the Washington Times-Herald

President for almost three years before his assassination in Dallas, many of his best-known phrases still ring true today, such as: “The common enemies of man are tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself.”

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

In 1903, socialite Isabella Stewart Gardner opened her museum “for the education and enjoyment of the public forever” and that public has been visiting ever since.

The exhibits, a bewilderingly eclectic collection of art, sculptures, tapestries, furniture, musical instruments, flora, manuscripts, letters and much more, are housed over several floors, whose balusters overlook a leafy garden courtyard.

Stewart believed in the potential of art to change lives and better society but didn’t have in mind what happened in 1990: the theft of 13 works of art including Rembrandt’s Christ in the storm of Galilee, which was ripped from its frame.

The FBI has an open casebook on the heist and still in place is a $10 million reward for information leading directly to the recovery in good condition of all 13 works of art – or $100,000 for information leading to the return of a single piece: a Napoleonic eagle finial.
