Catalonia prepares to boost its profile in landmark year

From hosting sporting events to celebrating cultural milestones, Catalonia is looking to drive tourism

Catalonia is preparing for a standout period on the global stage, with a series of major cultural and sporting milestones set to boost the region’s international profile over the coming years.

This year Barcelona celebrates a Year of Cultural Tourism marked by three significant anniversaries. The city has been named UNESCO World Capital of Architecture, coinciding with the centenary of the death of Antoni Gaudí and the 150th anniversary of the birth of Pau Casals. A programme of events throughout the year will celebrate both figures while positioning Barcelona at the centre of global architectural discourse.

The spotlight will also turn to sport in July 2026, when Barcelona hosts the Grand Départ of the Tour de France for the first time. Although the race has previously passed through the city, this marks its debut as the official starting point.

Three stages will take place between July 4 and 6, underlining Catalonia’s long-standing connection to cycling and its commitment to sustainable travel.

Alongside headline events, the region is expanding its tourism offering with new active travel experiences. The recently launched Grand Tour of Catalonia Gravel Bike Route invites visitors to explore landscapes ranging from the Pyrenees to the Costa Brava via an extensive network of off-road trails, supported by bike-friendly infrastructure and services.

Looking further ahead, Catalonia has also secured one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments. The Ryder Cup will be staged in the region for the first time in 2031 at Camiral Golf and Wellness in Caldes de Malavella, bringing another major international audience to the destination.

With a diverse landscape spanning mountains, coastline and historic cities, Catalonia continues to position itself as a year-round Mediterranean destination.
