Virginia Beach is highlighting its range of eco-friendly initiatives and immersive experiences for visitors to mark World Earth Day on April 22.

Located on the East Coast, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Beach has a programme in place to ensure environmental stewardship.

Natural and sustainable initiatives offer a range of experience for visitors: from conservation projects to eco-friendly attractions, the city is committed to preserving its rich coastal landscapes while promoting responsible tourism.

Visitors can embark on kayaking or paddleboarding adventures through the waters of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and First Landing State Park.

They can glide across gorgeous waterways surrounded by abundant wildlife, explore hidden caves, spot dolphins, or enjoy a peaceful paddle as they take in the views.

Bird watching at False Cape State Park offers a glimpse into Virginia Beach’s diverse wildlife, from migratory birds to native coastal species.

For something a bit different, Mount Trashmore is a unique park that was created from compacted layers of solid waste and clean soil. It encompasses two man-made mountains and offers visitors hiking trails that allow them to witness first-hand the park’s transformation while enjoying scenic trails that showcase creative land restoration.

Virginia Beach’s commitment to sustainability extends to its growing culinary scene, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Dock-to-dock seafood includes Lynnhaven oysters and seasonal produce at farm-to-table restaurants.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Mobile Oyster Restoration Center is working to transplant 10 billion new oysters into the Bay, which supports the health of local ecosystems.

And from craft brews on the Virginia Beach Craft Beer Trail to dining experiences like kayaking to Blue Peter’s for a seafood feast, the city offers a taste of the region’s rich flavours while supporting eco-conscious practices.

From April 19-26, First Landing State Park will host Earth Week celebrations, offering programmes that highlight these environmental conservation initiatives.

Over two weekends, visitors can join the rangers for activities that highlight the importance of environmental conservation.

Each day focuses on a unique theme, such as self-guided tours, hands-on activities such as community clean-ups, eco-tours, and fun, educational experiences that connect them to the environment in meaningful ways.
