One year after devastating fires ripped through part of the island, Maui is open for business and encouraging tourists to visit to speed its recovery – but urges them to show respect
“Since the devastating Hawaii wildfires in August 2023 in Lāhainā in West Maui, that resulted in the loss of lives, homes, cultural landmarks, and businesses, the outpouring of support from around the world has been deeply appreciated by islanders, who are ready to open their hearts and home to travellers again,” said a spokesperson from Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA).
“We are still in the midst of recovery efforts but respectful travel to the Hawaiian Islands, especially Maui (with the exception of Lāhainā that remains closed), is encouraged more than ever.
“The best way to support Maui’s recovery is for travellers to visit…Maui’s economy depends on a robust visitor industry and there is still plenty to see and do that is away from the fire-affected areas of Lāhainā Town. Maui is ready to welcome travellers,” they added.
“Visitors are invited to experience Hawaii’s beauty and culture by embracing the Hawaiians’ deep commitment to Mālama, meaning ‘to care for and give back’. This can be done in the following ways: Visit with aloha, compassion and empathy; support local businesses (visit www.mauinuifirst.com) for suggestions; and Mālama (care for) Maui through voluntourism experiences.
