Hotel review: Iberostar Selection Es Trenc, Majorca

THE HOTEL

This five-star hotel, in the coastal village of Colònia de Sant Jordi, Es Trenc, is Iberostar’s 16th property in Majorca, where this family-owned group also has its headquarters. All of the 198 bedrooms and suites have balconies and, thanks to the positioning and design of the hotel, every single one has sea views.

The long, sandy beach of Es Trenc is a short and flat bike ride away (mostly along a wooden coastal path) but there’s an even more beautiful beach, Es Carbo, in the other direction, which involves a 20-minute bike ride and then a 20-minute walk – but it’s worth it. Although children are welcome, there are no dedicated kids’ facilities so the hotel is more suited to adults only, or families with older teenagers.

THE BACKGROUND

Previously under another brand, the hotel re-opened as an Iberostar Selection in April 2025 after a major renovation. Recognising demand for larger, more luxurious accommodation, Iberostar chose to reconfigure the hotel to create more suites, including three themed suites: the Mediterranean Infinity Suite, Cabrera Sea View Suite, and Es Trenc Sea View Suite.

With a strong focus on sustainability, Iberostar has implemented several initiatives to help cut the hotel’s carbon footprint. It’s 100% electrified and runs exclusively on renewable energy, while energy monitoring systems in all rooms inform guests about their individual savings. Instead of bottled water, each room or suite has a jug and glasses and guests can fill up at water stations, which are conveniently placed throughout hotel.

In 2025, its first summer season, the hotel offered room only, half board and all-inclusive stays but the all-inclusive option will be dropped for 2026. Our September stay was on an all-inclusive basis, with a buffet breakfast and dinner, but as a temporary measure the lunchtime buffet had been replaced by a choice from the menu from the lobby bar.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

With 11 floors, the hotel is the tallest of a cluster of properties along this stretch of coastline. It’s on the edge of a peninsula, which is why all of the rooms and suites enjoy sea views. A porter met our taxi and took our luggage, directing us into the lobby.

We were invited to sit down and offered a delicious welcome mocktail of grapefruit and other juices. The rim of the glass was lined with salt from the nearby salt flats of Salines des Trenc. It was around 1.30pm and our room wasn’t ready so, after filling out various forms, we were invited to make our way for lunch in the ground-floor restaurant, where we opted to sit outside on the large terrace to enjoy the warm temperatures and sea views.

We chose from a large menu. My son (15) had a burger and chips, my husband had pa ambo li – the local Majorcan open sandwich – and I had tacos. It was all delicious, as were all the meals we had during our stay. We took our time and when we were done our suite (number 502) was ready.

THE ROOM

Our family suite was separated into two distinct spaces. The first had an open wardrobe, cupboards and drawers on the right and on the left a double sink, separate toilet and a large double sofa bed which was already made up for our son.

It also had a balcony, with room for two chairs and a small round table, looking over the sea and the coastal path. The second space had nothing except for a super king-sized bed, bedside tables, flat screen TV and a larger balcony overlooking the hotel’s sail shaped swimming pool and the Mediterranean beyond. In between the two spaces was a large walk-in shower.

Nice touches in the room included straighteners (as well as the usual hair dryer), a yoga mat, beach bag, and a free mini bar with soft drinks, sangria, beers and small bottles of cava, plus a jar of almonds. New savoury or sweet snacks were delivered each day by the housekeeping team.

All of the rooms are newly renovated and are fresh and modern with tiled stone floors and bleached wood, giving them a Mediterranean feel. The simple, minimalist, sand and sage interiors help puts the focus on the expansive windows with the sea views, which are absolutely stunning.

THE FACILITIES

There are two pools – a small rooftop pool and a super Instagram-friendly sail-shaped pool. Although it looks great, especially from above, it’s split into two separate pools and the longer pool is quite narrow, making it difficult to do lengths and certainly not if you want to overtake anyone. But most guests seemed to want to just take a quick dip to cool off anyway.

Those who want a proper swim can go out through a gate at the far side of the pool area, walk (carefully) across some large boulders and take the steps down into the open sea.

The pool is surrounded by sun loungers and a poolside bar serving cold drinks at the bar or at your sun lounger. On the first afternoon, the kitchen staff set up a little table with a choice of three varieties of ensaimada, the traditional Majorcan pastry – one with just a dusting of icing sugar, another with a cream filling and another with chocolate. Guests can hire bikes for a reasonable €11 a day and they come with locks. They’re a great way to get to the beaches or to the nearby marina.

A gym has all the usual equipment, plus an outside area with a rowing machine and a few weight stations. There’s a programme of activities each day, including yoga, pilates, aqua fit and poolside cocktail making, which are advertised on the hotel’s app. I joined an al fresco morning yoga session with four other female guests – a great way to start the day. A spa on the first floor offers a range of massages and treatments inspired by Mallorca’s seawaters and local salt.

Each evening, we headed up to the rooftop bar for pre-dinners cocktails and watched the sunset, watching the other guests take it in turns to pose by the pool with the red sky behind. After dinner, we went back up to the rooftop to listen to DJs and live musicians.

One night of the week there’s an Open Cinema with a giant screen by the main pool. We watched Moulin Rouge from sun loungers, tucking into cartons of popcorn brought round by the hotel staff.

EST GAST 0012

The food was excellent. Breakfast highlights included an array of fruit smoothies, omelettes and eggs cooked to order, a wide selection of fresh fruit and yoghurts, pancakes, tea in a pot to keep it warm, and a vast choice of breads, cheeses, and cold meats.

At the evening buffet, the choice of starters, mains and desserts was also huge. One night there was whole sushi section, another night delicious oysters, plus pizzas and paella, alongside a host of other hot dishes and a long salad bar.

A chef also cooked fish and meat to order on a griddle. One night my teenage son had four steaks and still made sure he had room for the irresistible desserts, which include ice creams with indulgent toppings.

The choice of wine was excellent and it was nicely chilled too. The food in the ground floor restaurant was so good we didn’t try the signature restaurant, Salivent, which takes its name from two Mallorcan words, “Sal” (salt) and “Vent” (wind), paying homage to the nearby salt flats. It wasn’t included in the all-inclusive rate but if you stayed on that board there’s a discount.

During our stay, we also took a taxi (eight minutes) to the salt flats at Selinas d’Es Trenc and did a tour (€10 adults, €6 children 8-15, under eights free) learning all about the salt production and the different types of salt. The production, which dates back to the fifth century, not only makes high quality salt but also promotes ecological diversity and protects the natural environment.

There’s a small shop selling the salt, including the Flor de Sal d’Es Trenc in various flavours and beautifully-packaged, which make great souvenirs or gifts.

THE VERDICT

The food here is a notch above many all-inclusives I’ve experience, both in terms of the breadth of choice and the quality. Service was good on the whole, although we didn’t discover until a few days into our stay about the app with information about the daily activities. I’m guessing we should have been told that at check-in.

The hotel is ideal for couples and also for families with older children who want some evening entertainment but not a full-on entertainment programme. I would definitely recommend a trip to Es Carbo beach if guests can drag themselves away from the pool!
