Detroit’s recovery scaling new heights

VisitUSA logotest

The USA’s flagship “comeback city” is enjoying a spurt of new hotels fuelled by rising visitor interest.

Detroit, Michigan, which has been transformed from the days it depended on manufacturing to become a magnet for of artisan businesses and restaurants, is experiencing an exponential growth of new hotels that is supporting a “hospitality revolution”.

The Motor City’s three newest hotels include Roost Apartment Hotel (a 117-unit hotel within the remodelled Book Tower), Cambria Hotel (a 154-room boutique hotel downtown), and The Godfrey Hotel (a 227-room Hilton Curio Collection hotel in Corktown).

In addition, the new AC Detroit Hotel is a 153-room, 11-story contemporary hotel in Midtown.

Michigan’s first AC hotel, which resides next door to the newly restored historic Bon Stelle Theatre, has planning permission in place to put in a rooftop bar.

Temple Detroit is a $72 million, 101-room hotel development near the city’s Masonic Temple. Construction is underway, and the hotel is due to open later this year.

A new JW Marriott hotel is springing up on the site of the former Joe Louis Arena. The massive 600-room, 25-story hotel will include 50,000 square feet of event and meeting space, as well as restaurants and a bar. A skybridge connection to neighbouring Huntington Place convention centre means that Detroit will become that much more sought after for hosting large-scale events – and the hotel itself is anticipated to generate $100 million per year. An opening date of 2027 is planned.

EDITION, an ultra-luxury hotel brand that is part of Marriott International, is earmarked for the Hudson’s Site development.

The five-star hotel will be in the tower, which reaches 685 feet tall and 45 storeys. Features will include a pool, restaurants, fitness centre, and more. Its opening has been slated for 2027.

The hotel boom is driving investment in supporting infrastructure, retail spaces, restaurants and other amenities, making Detroit an attractive option for visitors to the Midwest.

Detroit’s visitor attractions include Hitsville U.S.A., the birthplace of Motown Records, whose chart-topping history is on display at their original headquarters, and the neoclassical Detroit Institute of Arts, which is home to the Detroit Industry Murals painted by Diego Rivera and inspired by the city’s ties to the auto industry.

In nearby Dearborn, the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation is home to a wide range of exhibits and immersive attractions – from race cars to trains to modular houses to microprocessors – designed to inspire, inform and engage.
