Low-season Benidorm

With a mild climate year-round, Benidorm is a great option for families or golfers looking for a shoulder season break, says Bev Fearis

Why sell it

This high-rise resort in Spain’s Costa Blanca was built purely for tourists and attracts millions of holidaymakers each year, mainly for its lively night scene.

But like all forward-thinking tourism destinations, over the years Benidorm has also worked hard to widen its appeal and extend beyond the peak summer season, investing in family-friendly attractions like waterparks and theme parks and world-class golf courses to target other visitors.

Who to sell to

Keen golfers have the choice of two challenging 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed courses at the Melia Villaitana, a beautiful resort a 10-minute drive from Benidorm.

Families are also well catered for with six pools, football pitches (some of the big Spanish teams train here), tennis, paddle tennis (hugely popular in Spain) and spa.

Walkers will love the signposted trails through the Sierra Gelada Natura reserve, north of Benidorm’s Levante Beach, which curls along the coastline. One of the most popular is an 8.5 km route from Benidorm’s famous cross (La Cruz) to El Albir lighthouse.

You can go it alone or join a walking tour with Costa Blanca Tours, which also runs Segway and boat trips.

When to sell

Unlike most Mediterranean resorts, Benidorm stays open all year around. In fact, 90% of the hotels are open 365 days, and so are most restaurants and bars. The pretty old town is ideal for out-of-season city breaks, helped by the town’s proximity to Alicante (40 minutes’ drive) and an easy two-hour flight from the UK. Sunseekers flock here in July/August when temperatures can reach 32C while May/June and September/October are a milder 18C to 25C. A growing number of Brits are heading to Benidorm in mid-November for its annual fiestas, which take place over several days. Inspired by British fans, an extra day of celebrations has been added on at the end when the whole town turns out for a fancy dress party.

What’s new

Spanish hotel group Barceló has opened a new four-star hotel – Benidorm Beach – in Levante Beach. Families are welcome but this glamorous hotel is recommended for adults. It has 264 rooms, 10 of which are adapted for people with reduced mobility. Its rooftop pool bar, B-Heaven, has panoramic views of the resort’s skyline.
