LATA puts sustainability first

The Latin American Travel Association (LATA) has created the LATA Sustainability Network.  This will comprise graduates from its pilt Strategic Sustainability Training Programme, who will meet quarterly to discuss their progress, challenges and provide peer to peer support with their sustainability journey.

The pilot began in November and has seen 11 companies – DMCs, hoteliers, and UK tour operators – complete the training, run in partnership with the Long Run – Preferred by Nature.

The first official cohort will now begin in April with a new intake of members, which also hopes to include expedition cruise companies.  Registration for the first cohort has lauched and LATA members can register here

The training programme is part of a wider LATA Sustainability Programme, which aims to position Latin America as a leading destination for sustainable travel.

The programme will:

  • Create best practice tools and resources, shared through dynamic programmes for LATA members.
  • Create a sustainable business community with clear and consistent sustainability policies that can be shared, understood and delivered.
  • Create a platform to promote and champion existing great work in sustainable tourism throughout Latin America to combat negative perceptions around tourism and sustainability. 

As part of this programme, LATA will also be launching a ‘Power of Tourism’ campaign at LATA Expo this year.

Megan Parkinson, Head of Sustainability at LATA, said: “We know that many of our members are making great headway in their individual sustainability journeys but for many, it’s a step that they feel unsure how to begin. 

“The programme’s objective was always to be as relevant for complete beginners as it was those further along so I am looking forward to seeing how we can share our learnings in the Sustainability Network and keep helping each other.”
