California dances with Costner on classic drives guide
by Steve Hartridge
Visit California has signed up Hollywood icon Kevin Costner to help promote the latest edition of its classic California road trips guide.
Available on the tourism board's website, the 52-page 2021 California Road Trips publication includes information to help travellers plan their driving itineraries in the Golden State.
It also includes tips on how to rent the perfect vehicle to match trip types.
Organised by geography, the guide showcases nine detailed itineraries: three originate in Southern California, three begin in the San Francisco Bay Area and three start in Sacramento. Each trip calls out hidden gems, scenic overlooks and suggested places to eat in the state.
2021 California Road Trips features Costner on the cover and includes an exclusive interview with the Oscar-winning director and actor.
Costner also details his favourite California destinations and his love for the open road. Some of his earliest memories involve road tripping around California, staring out the window of the family Buick as they drove to see redwoods and sequoias.
In the interview, Costner discusses his latest venture as the co-founder of HereHear, a mobile app that enriches road trips with recorded snippets of history and storytelling.
Visit California President and CEO Caroline Beteta said: “Kevin Costner is a proud son of California, and he has a passion for the state’s history and natural wonders that make the state the world’s ultimate road trip destination.
"As travellers eagerly begin planning trips across California, this new guide serves as a valuable resource for exploring the state’s vibrant urban cities and iconic attractions, along with awe-inspiring vistas and hidden gems.”
Tour operator America As You Like It has a Pacific Coast Highway package priced from £1,459pp for travel in November. It includes flights, car hire, accommodation from San Francisco down to San Diego, including the Best Western Casa Grande in Pismo Beach and the Best Western Plus Sunset Plaza in West Hollywood.
