Great Rail Journeys is marking its 50th anniversary this year with the introduction of a tour featuring the Maharajahs’ Express.
The eight-day train journey – dubbed India’s answer to the Venice-Simplon Orient Express – is recognised as the country’s most expensive and luxurious rail experience. It is included in a 16-day tour that takes in Delhi, Amritsar and Shimla. Prices start at £10,995pp based on a September 2024 departure including flights.
Travellers are hosted in double or twin-bed cabins with five-star ensuite facilities, Wifi, TV and air-conditioning. All onboard meals are included and prepared to gourmet standards, with dining in two dedicated dining cars, and guests can take advantage of a 24-hour butler service.
The full itinerary includes a tailored tour around Old Delhi and a seven-course tasting menu at Haveli Dharampura, a ride on the quaint Toy Train and an early morning game drive through Ranthambore National Park. Guests also receive a tour of Jaipur’s City Palace and the Amber Fort by Jeep, a visit to the iconic Taj Mahal at sunrise and an exclusive boat trip on the River Ganges.
Great Rail Journeys already offers similar luxury train experiences, including India’s Palace and Wheel, which explores Rajasthan and Agra, and South Africa’s Blue Train. The operator said the new tour had been added in response to a huge increase in interest for India, with bookings this year already up 182%.
