Vacations to America has an 11-day Great Lakes holiday that combines the region’s gateway city of Chicago with a wide diversity of sights and experiences based around the world’s largest body of fresh water.
Priced from £3,865pp, including car hire, guide, maps and directions, the road trip takes in Saugatuck, Mackinac Island, Chicago and The Great Lakes and Suttons Bay.
Highlights during two days in Chicago include the John Hancock Observatory and the Skywalk experience, for panoramic views of the city, Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park, Navy Pier and Chicago’s 26-mile stretch of beach.
Saugatuck is a harbour village on the shores of Lake Michigan, with a shoreline and close to the towns of Kalamazoo and Holland.
Clients will discover the wonders of Sleeping Bear Dunes, where they can gaze out over sweeping vistas of Lake Michigan from the top of high sand dunes.
They will also visit some of the region’s excellent local wineries and explore Traverse City (pictured below), which is the personification of charming small-town America.
They will then catch a scenic ferry for the short journey to Mackinac Island (pictured above) and be transported straight into a living Victorian village. Modern transport is prohibited, so the options are a leisurely stroll or a bike or a horse-drawn carriage to discover Arch Rock, carefully restored Victorian homes and the island’s famous fudge.
Heading back south the final night is spent in Grand Rapids, on the banks of the Grand River.
