Emerging Florida destination ready for UK visitors

Florida offers a world of experiences in one state but there are plenty of its regions that remain largely off the well-trodden tourist trails and are still waiting to be discovered by international visitors.

On the Sunshine State’s Gulf Coast, just a couple of hours from Tampa, the Punta Gorda Englewood Beach area has long been known in the U.S. as a destination where you can experience the ‘Old Florida’ – but is now looking to get the word out to UK travellers that it should feature on any Florida itinerary.

” Punta Gorda Englewood Beach is looking to capitalise on Britons’ love of Florida and their desire for a more authentic experiences,” says, Gary Fletcher, the destination’s UK representative.

“It has pristine beaches, exceptional restaurants, and a wonderful downtown area, and our newly-acquired membership of Visit USA and participation in some of its activities will help alert the trade and consumers to this.”

The area is split between the town of Punta Gorda and the beach area in Englewood, with the town itself characterised by a collection of independent stores, eateries, and bars.

Fisherman’s Village has high-end accommodation set above an area of shops and bars and overlooking the bay area.

Punta Gorda attractions include Babcock Ranch, where four different ecosystems can be experienced in a preserved environment by tour on an open-sided bus.

“Visitors who take the tour discover that it is not only fun but highly educational and covers fauna and wildlife up close, including alligators,” adds Fletcher.

“The town also boasts many opportunities to experience wildlife in the context of rescue and rehabilitation. It has a wonderful sculpture park and all the water-based excursions and activities that you would hope for and expect from a shore -front location.”

Englewood Beach is known for its uncrowned unspoiled beaches, with accommodation opportunities that range from quaint B&B’s to rental homes.

New is a 785-room Sunseeker Resort Charlotte Harbour, located on the waterfront. It features 20 dining options, several pools and a championship golf course exclusive to resort guests.

Adds Fletcher: “Punta Gorda Englewood Beach fits perfectly into an a fly-drive itinerary as a pre- or post-southern Florida experience, following perhaps a visit to the southern theme parks, Orlando, Tampa or even Miami.

“I would suggest staying at least three nights, for that combination of a beach and town experience,” he recommends.

And his three ‘must do’s whilst in the area?

“I would suggest a sunset cruise out of the harbour, cocktails in Fisherman Village, and getting up close and personal with live alligators.”
