Banff ramps up sustainable tourism efforts

Banff & Lake Louise Tourism has become a member of Tourism Cares, a US-based non-profit organisation designed to promote sustainable tourism.

The organisation is focused on uniting all sectors of the travel industry, including destinations, tour operators, travel advisors, and suppliers, to ensure these businesses create positive environmental and social impacts for communities around the globe.

Tourism Cares provides three key programmes for members looking to enhance their sustainability credentials – Meaningful Travel Map, Meaningful Travel Summits, and Meaningful Travel Platform.

Meaningful Travel Map is a B2B tool that helps the travel trade and sustainably-minded travellers easily source organisations making positive social and environmental impacts in destinations. The interactive global map directly connects travel professionals with sustainable, community-led enterprises, products, services, accommodations, and tours that can be incorporated into their itineraries.

The map currently includes 200 vetted partners across 14 countries, including North America (US, Canada). The map currently includes Alberta Food Tours, Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary, and Rocky Mountain Adaptive in the Alberta region.

“Becoming a member of Tourism Cares as a DMO gives us additional opportunities to advance and share the 10-Year Vision For Tourism in Banff and Lake Louise, and connect with like-minded tourism industry partners,” said a representative at Banff & Lake Louise Tourism. “It also opens doors for our members who meet the criteria to be included in the Meaningful Travel Map and connect with travel professionals who are looking for sustainable tourism providers, creating a competitive advantage to the growing consumer demand of sustainable travel.”

Banff & Lake Louise Tourism also has access to Meaningful Travel Summits through the initiative which provide education and networking. Plus the Meaningful Travel Platform, a digital training platform designed to grow members’ sustainability knowledge and practices, and provide professional development to their teams.
