AVANI+ Fares Resort Maldives

Making its debut this year, the uber-cool AVANI+ Fares Maldives Resort is geared towards discerning millennials who demand both luxury and fun.

Location

Touching down at Male airport after a direct 10-hour flight on British Airways, we are ushered into a bright, serene lounge in the airport’s brand new seaplane terminal. It’s still early, so the pastries and piping hot coffee are the ideal accompaniment to the sight of seaplanes taking off and landing through the floor to ceiling windows.

A short plane ride showcases the otherworldly beauty of the atolls, with their concentric blue and green circles of sea and lagoon. The resort is located on the western edge of Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This means unparalleled snorkelling with manta rays in Hanifaru Bay and bucket-list dolphin sighting opportunities in the lagoon.

Check in

We are picked up by speedboat from a small jetty floating in the middle of the ocean, immediately evoking a feeling of being celebs en route to a secret private island. As we race across the waves, we see our welcoming committee in the distance. The staff are out in full force to greet us, singing, shaking tambourines, and forming heart signs with their hands.

Ice cold coconut water, served in its shell, is presented to us along with cold towels. There’s no need to visit reception, as check-in is all done on the jetty, and the waiting golf buggy whizzes us straight to our villas.

The room

Although the Maldives’ iconic water villas are much-feted, staying in a beach villa has a different set of pros. My villa has its own plunge pool and garden space, plus direct access to the white sands and calm lap of the ocean just steps away. The surrounding foliage also makes it feel very private and secluded.

The room is unmistakably designed with young, millennial women in mind. My Nespresso machine, a selection of herbal teas, and a snack drawer stuffed with chocolates and crisps saw quite a lot of action, as did a mini-bar filled with premium branded spirits and wines. Other nice touches included extra wardrobe space, plug sockets next to the mirror, and a hidden vanity in the table, so that two friends sharing can get ready at the same time.

There are also two showers- an indoor rainshower and an outdoor one, where you can listen to the songs of indigenous birds as you shampoo your hair. As well as an outdoor freestanding bath, the icing on the cake is the Malin+Goetz products, from rum body wash to cilantro conditioner.

Of course the bed is nothing to be sniffed at. Ultra-comfy, it faces towards the window, meaning you can watch the sun rise as you nestle under the crisp sheets and the cloud-like pillows.

Facilities

With a focus on wellness, there are plenty of relaxing and energising pastimes on offer. Sunrise yoga on the jetty, while the sea provides the perfect ASMR backdrop; watersports including flyboarding; tennis and badminton courts; and a meditative sound bath to aid with deep, restful sleep. The spa is also a great place to rejuvenate with body scrubs, Thai and Swedish massage, and other high-tech treatments.

The restorative powers of nature can be felt on a snorkelling trip in the 1.6-mile-long lagoon, with its alluring coral clusters, tropical fish, elusive rays and, if you’re lucky, dolphins. Guests who prefer to stay dry can go searching for turtles by boat or sport fishing. There’s also the awe-inducing sunset dolphin cruise, where lucky sailers can spot pods playing with the boat, and spinning underwater.

There’s an abundance of places to grab a bite. The Skipjack Bar is the resort’s casual dining poolside bar, serving pasta, traditional curries and comfort food, along with an inventive selection of fun cocktails. While Charcoal is the signature seafood grill, ideal for a night of dressing up, savouring treats from the grill and sipping sommelier-paired wines.

On the final night we are treated to a very special private dining experience, Adrift. Tables are set up on the main beach for us (although this can be done anywhere on the island), surrounded by candles, which cast a soft light around us. Delectable BBQ food and fine wines are provided by our own chef and butler, as the buzz of conversation melts into the sound of the waves.

The Verdict

The AVANI + Fares Resort knows exactly what its guests want. Lounging by the pool or in the jacuzzi by day, and watching a fire show with a cocktail in hand as the DJ drops a beat.
