Poll finds travellers are seeking more affordable alternatives

Montenegro, Slovenia and Albania are emerging as new favourites for British holidaymakers due to their affordability.

While Spain, France, and Greece remain destination staples, a OnePoll survey of 2,000 UK adults by The Advantage Travel Partnership identified Montenegro (pictured), Slovenia and Albania as “destination dupes” – more budget-friendly alternatives to the traditional hotspots.

The survey also found that alongside staple long-haul destinations such as Thailand and the Indian Ocean, interest is also growing in Madagascar and Colombia.

When the survey asked Brits the reasons for choosing the holiday destinations, the biggest draw for Gen Z travellers (57%) is culture, with museums, festivals, and history topping their wish lists.

But for 25–34-year-olds, the main reason for travelling is to seek rest, relaxation and wellness.

The poll also found that 12% of all respondents say they are looking to get away specifically to escape the UK’s political and economic climate and this number rose to 36% among 18–44-year-olds.

When it came to the environmental impact of travel, just under half (49%) of respondents said value for money was more important when it came to booking accommodation and travel.

One in four said they were either not aware of the environmental impact, didn’t care about the impact, or didn’t believe the environmental impact of travel impacted them.

Nearly a quarter of those surveyed reported experiencing issues with their accommodation when on a recent holiday, while 19% faced flight-related problems such as overbooking or cancellations.

Among those who encountered difficulties, 37% said they turned to their travel agent for help and, of those, 86% said their issues were successfully resolved.
