A tribute to Charitable Travel Founder Melissa Tilling

A tribute to Charitable Travel Founder Melissa Tilling

Charitable Travel and Sustainable Journeys Founder & CEO Melissa Tilling passed away suddenly at the weekend.

Melissa Tilling, an industry veteran of over 30 years and close friend of the Selling Travel team, brought positive change to the travel industry through her roles at private enterprises, social entities and charities.

She founded Charitable Travel during the pandemic and more recently her new tour operation Sustainable Journeys, both of which focused on making environmentally and ethically responsible travel more accessible.

The family paid this tribute: “Melissa was an extremely loved daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She will be sorely missed by all of us, and I am sure within the travel industry to which she devoted her life.”

Close friend and Selling Travel Publisher, Steve Thompson, said this of Melissa: “I have known Mel for nearly two decades, initially as an industry colleague and then as a fantastic loyal friend. Over the years we shared our passion of all things travel on numerous holidays to far-flung corners of the globe. We enjoyed booking surprise trips away for one another. On one trip, I was actually sat on a plane before I was told we were going to Vienna!”

Mel’s sense of humour and passion to succeed made her a true force within our great industry. In recent years she wanted to ‘give something back’ so founded Charitable Travel. This then lead to the formation of the Charitable Travel Fund and Charitable Radio.

“Travel has lost a true trailblazer and all the team at Selling Travel will miss her greatly. I have lost a wonderful friend and will forever have an empty space in my heart.”

Our thoughts are with Melissa’s family.
