As we welcome the spookiest season of the year, internet searches for the most haunted places in the world have skyrocketed. To celebrate Halloween, travel experts at Planet Cruise have delved into TripAdvisor data to unveil the creepiest destinations across the globe.
1. Mary Kings Close, Edinburgh, Scotland
Taking the crown for the most haunted place in the world is Mary Kings Close in Edinburgh. Visitors can take a guided tour to learn more about the residents who lived and worked there during the 1600s-1800s. They might even run into Annie, one of many spirits haunting this spooky spot.
2. Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, USA
Known for its dark past of suicides, murders and tortures, inmates were tightly bound in a ‘mad chair’ that resulted in amputation. Clients can scare themselves silly by touring the creepy site during the day or night. There are five pop-up haunted houses, too.
3. The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colorado, USA
Situated in Colorado’s scenic Estes Park, this spine-chilling hotel sparked inspiration for Stephen King’s book, The Shining, and it was later chosen as the filming location. Room 217 is said to be haunted by a ghost named Mrs Wilson, who was one of many housekeepers back in the early 1900s.
4. Crumlin Road Gaol, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Another haunted jail is Belfast’s Crumlin Road Gaol. In use from 1846-1996, it opened again in 2012 for tourists to explore its chilling hanging cell, graveyard, hospital and tunnels. Clients can take part in paranormal tours to witness the alleged unexplained noises and ghostly sightings of the 17 men that were executed.
5. St Augustine Lighthouse, Florida, USA
Florida’s St Augustine Lighthouse’s frightening story starts with the four daughters of Hezekiah Pittee who managed the lighthouse in the 1800s. They fell into the water and drowned after playing with a friend. Sightings, footsteps and giggles have since been reported.
The events of the past three years may have spooked the life out of us but thrill-seeking clients will nevertheless be looking forward to some festive fun across the globe this Halloween. Check out Trip or Treat? for more spooky travel inspiration.
